Grandma Jean was the youngest of five girls and taught me so many things that bring joy to my life... ...I was driving through my neighborhood and I saw a house with a stone front that reminded me of somewhere, and the name 'Mineral Point' popped into my head. I thought about the times my grandparents took my brothers and myself on vacations every summer, from around 1965 to 1975. We traveled to historic sites all over Wisconsin and nearby states like Kentucky for Abraham Lincoln's birthplace, and also Mammoth Cave. The garish and fascinating 'House On The Rock,' and Mineral Point where early Wisconsin miners lived and settled. Phillips Wisconsin where my great uncle and aunt lived in 'the parsonage.' All the way to New Hampshire two or three times when my aunt and uncle lived there. Also Vermont, Toronto, Quebec, Niagara Falls. Many, many road trips with three grandchildren... Before cell phones and portable music, we brought along miniature card games: Hearts, Crazy Eights, Old Maid card decks from Whitman Publishing in Racine. Summertime and road trips. Today I am grateful for Grandma Jean and her gifts of wonderful childhood road trips. Today I can give from my heart the gift of being that kind of grandmother to the newest member of the family.
